Specialty Services - Physical Therapy for Musicians
Musicians, both amateur and professional, are at significant risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders which may interfere with the ability to perform their art, as well as inhibit other aspects of normal daily activity. Common disorders range from tendonitis in the hands and arms of instrumental musicians, neck and back pain in vocalists, and knee or ankle sprains in marching musicians. The repetitive nature of practice and instrument performance as well as maintaining prolonged postures and high levels of stress contribute to such injuries.
It is important for this population to seek the help of healthcare providers who understand their unique demands and the implications of their dysfunction. At Motion Stability, we combine a background knowledge of music with advance training in treatment of musculoskeletal dysfunction to customize prevention and rehabilitation programs for musicians of all varieties. By observing each individual performing their specific vocal or instrumental talent, we are able to identify muscle imbalances, abnormal movement patterns and postural deviations. We incorporate manual therapy, appropriate exercise and postural or ergonomic adaptations, while still maintaining the integrity of necessary musical techniques.
Throughout treatment, we are happy to collaborate with individual teachers or instructors to properly assess technique and performance ability. Open communication regarding physical demands of music performance and the abilities of the musician to safely perform without provoking further injury is of the utmost importance. Collaboration is also beneficial to understand future practice and performance expectations while focusing on prevention of exacerbation.
